Phyllis Arnold has been specialising in painted portrait silhouettes since the late 1960's and is considered the top silhouette portrait artist in the United Kingdom. This has been recognised by the award of the Memorial Gold Bowl of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. Portraits, either head and shoulders or conversation groups, which can include domestic animals, can be executed on either card, vellum or plaster. Her unique method of painting a portrait silhouette on plaster from a single sitting, carries on a tradition of painting on a plaster surface which was used by a small number of profile artists, in the years between 1770 and 1820.

Her speciality is depicting hair and certain types of clothing with a diaphanous edging, executed with the finest delicacy. Added to this she often overpaints the soft black finish with an ochre bronzing, which adds richness and a three dimentional effect. Her silhouette portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was a familiar sight, when it was chosen to enhance a number of fine limited edition porcelain commemorative pieces issued by Coalport Porcelain, to mark the Silver Jubilee.
Prices Historical or Decorative silhouettes may be commissioned in black with ochre overpainting, or with coloured costume. Jewelery sized works are overpainted with gold powder. Types of Portrait Silhouettes Head and Shoulders Gouache on plaster or vellum with Acorn frame. (A traditional Acorn frame consists of a gilt oval bezel within a black surround, surmounted by a brass acorn hanger. The glass is convex). Three quarter length, military uniform Gouache on plaster or vellum with Acorn frame with rectangular opening. Conversation group Gouache and ink on prepared board. Price on application, depending on size and number of sitters, type of furniture, pets etc. Copies of existing silhouettes Painted copies of existing family silhouettes can be produced if required.
